Fire-Rated Wall Boxes, SDA Installations and the Question Many Projects Forget to Ask

Fire-Rated Wall Boxes, SDA Installations and the Question Many Projects Forget to Ask

As Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), student accommodation, hospitality and smart building projects continue to evolve, architects and consultants are increasingly seeking larger-format electrical interfaces, automation controls and accessibility systems that extend beyond the capabilities of traditional Australian switch plate arrangements.

At TEM, one of the most common questions we receive is:

"What fire-rated wall box should we use?"

While this appears to be a simple product question, the reality is often far more complex.

The First Question Should Not Be About the Wall Box

In many cases, the correct starting point is:

What type of wall construction is being used?

The fire performance of a recessed electrical installation may be influenced by:

  • Wall construction type
  • Fire Resistance Level (FRL)
  • Installation methodology
  • Wall penetrations
  • Available technical evidence
  • Project-specific fire engineering requirements

A wall box is only one component of the overall wall system.

Why This Matters

Historically, many enquiries focus on the product itself.

However, the suitability of a recessed installation typically depends upon the complete wall assembly, not simply the electrical enclosure.

For example, requirements may differ significantly between:

  • Lightweight cavity wall systems
  • Masonry wall systems
  • Reinforced concrete wall systems

The same electrical device may require entirely different installation approaches depending on the wall construction.

Larger Format SDA Interfaces

This consideration becomes increasingly important within SDA and accessibility projects, where larger-format control interfaces are often preferred for ease of use and accessibility.

Conventional Australian wall box solutions may not always provide a suitable platform for these installations.

As a result, increasing attention is being given to alternative wall box systems, including European-format fire-protection wall boxes designed specifically for larger-format electrical and automation installations.

TEM's Position

TEM can provide:

  • Product information
  • Technical documentation
  • Installation guidance
  • Available manufacturer test evidence

However, assessment of the suitability of a recessed installation within a fire-rated wall system remains the responsibility of:

  • The project design team
  • The project fire engineer
  • The certifier
  • Relevant approval authorities

A Better Design Question

Rather than asking:

"Which fire-rated wall box should I use?"

Consider starting with:

"What wall construction am I installing into?"

That single question often determines the entire compliance pathway.

Further Information

TEM has prepared a detailed guidance document:

TEM SDA Architectural Advisory – Fire-Rated Recessed Electrical Wall Boxes

The advisory discusses:

  • Lightweight fire-rated wall systems
  • Masonry wall systems
  • Reinforced concrete wall systems
  • Australian fire-rated wall boxes
  • European-format wall box systems
  • Available technical evidence
  • Fire engineering considerations
